How to Sell on TikTok Shop As a Business or Affiliate Creator

Have you ever been mindlessly scrolling through TikTok and suddenly found yourself about to buy a weird handheld steamer or posture-correcting device? Yeah, that’s the alluring power of TikTok Shop.

TikTok Shop has turned the feed into one of the fastest-growing storefronts on the internet, with sales in the US climbing 84% year over year and accounting for 18% of all social commerce in the nation. If you're a creator or a business owner who wants to cash in on that opportunity, this is your guide to doing so.

We'll walk you through the setup, fees, and content that drives sales, as well as how affiliate partnerships work and which parts of the process you should automate.

TL;DR

  • TikTok Shop lets you list products directly inside the app. Setup through TikTok Seller Center takes under an hour.
  • TikTok Shop fees start with a referral commission per sale (which varies by category), plus payment processing.
  • Sales drivers are shoppable content, TikTok Live shopping, affiliate partnerships, and TikTok Shop ads.

How TikTok Shop Works

TikTok Shop is an in-app shopping feature that lets sellers list products and tag them in videos and LIVE streams so buyers can purchase them without ever leaving TikTok.

There are a few ways to sell on TikTok Shop. You can have a product showcase right on your profile, shoppable videos with tappable product links, TikTok LIVE shopping sessions, and a Shop tab where buyers browse and search.

TikTok Shop is currently available in the US, UK, and several Southeast Asian countries.

Who can sell on TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop eligibility for US-based sellers comes down to a short checklist of requirements. The details differ by country, and TikTok treats individual sellers and registered businesses slightly differently, but here's what you'll generally need:

  • A TikTok Business Account (you can switch from a personal account in settings).
  • A registered business or a valid government ID. Sole proprietors and registered companies both work.
  • A business LLC and an EIN if you're operating as a business (sole sellers can use a personal ID).
  • A US-based bank account to receive your payouts.
  • At least 1,000 followers if you're selling as an individual creator.

If you've got those squared away, you're ready to set up shop. (Get it?)

How to Set Up Your TikTok Shop

Once you're ready, the TikTok Seller Center is where the actual TikTok Shop setup happens. The whole thing can be done in under an hour, though TikTok reviews applications, so give it a little turnaround time before you're fully live.

Here's the order of operations:

  1. Create a TikTok Business Account (or switch your existing account over).
  2. Head to TikTok Seller Center and start a seller application.
  3. Submit your business documents and verify your identity.
  4. Add your shop details — name, logo, and a short description.
  5. Link your US-based bank account so you can actually get paid.
  6. Add your first product (title, description, photos, pricing, and shipping).
  7. Publish, and start selling once you're approved.

It seems like a lot to start, but it has the potential for a big return. And here are a few tips from the pros to make sure you’re successful:

  • Your listings do a lot of heavy lifting, so don't phone them in. Use high-quality photos and add lifestyle images or videos showing the product in use.
  • Write keyword-rich titles and detailed descriptions that match phrases people might search for on TikTok.
  • Price competitively, and pick your shipping setup. You can self-fulfill orders or use Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT). FBT hands warehousing and shipping over to TikTok so you don't have to box things up yourself.

TikTok Shop fees

Good news first: there's no monthly subscription fee just to open a TikTok Shop. Next, the bad news: there are fees, and they come out of your sales.

The main fee is a referral fee, a commission TikTok takes on each sale that varies by product category, typically in the 2-8% range.

On top of that, there's a small payment processing fee, and sometimes promotional co-funding if you opt into TikTok-run discount campaigns. TikTok has historically offered reduced commission rates for new sellers as a promotional incentive, so check what's on the table when you sign up.

Create Content That Sells (Not Just Entertains)

Listing your products is step one. Getting taps is step two, and that requires creating shoppable content.

The content formats that drive sales on TikTok are product demos and tutorials, unboxings, and get-ready-with-me (GRWM) videos featuring your products. If you can hire a creator or affiliate marketer to create UGC in this nature, you should, because TikTok users respond best to content that feels real, not produced for an ad.

Make sure you tag your products so viewers can tap and buy instantly. Product tagging best practices are to:

  • Tag the product early in the video (<1 second)
  • Mention it verbally
  • Drop a clear CTA like "tap to buy it now!”

Also, TikTok Shop has built-in tools for running promotions: flash deals, percentage-off coupons, free shipping thresholds, and bundle deals. You can use these from time to time to create a sense of urgency (“25% for 24 hours only!”) that encourages viewers to buy.

TikTok Live

TikTok LIVE is a surprisingly effective way to drive sales on TikTok; LIVEs convert at up to 10x the rate of static content. The real-time experience of a LIVE lets sellers answer questions while showcasing products to a captive audience.

Never gone LIVE? Here's a short overview of how to prepare for your first LIVE Shopping experience.

  1. Prep a few hero products and write down the key talking points for each.
  2. Aim to go live for at least 30 to 60 minutes so the algorithm has time to send viewers your way.
  3. When the stream ends, reply to comments and DMs from people who watched but didn't buy, and ask for reviews from those who did.

When you're streaming, pin the products you're featuring so viewers can tap straight to checkout. Keep engagement high with a Q&A and flash discounts for live viewers. Promote your stream in advance with a teaser video so people show up.

TikTok Shop ads

Organic content is a must-have, but you can also create ads to pour fuel on your top-performing posts. In TikTok Ads Manager, you can create ads with the Sales objective that points directly to your TikTok Shop page. Two of the best-performing ad formats include:

  • Video Shopping Ads, which add shopping options to your videos and advertise your products.
  • LIVE Shopping Ads, which add shopping options to your Live videos.

To set them up, log in to TikTok Ads Manager, click Create ad, select Sales as your ad objective, choose TikTok Shop as your product source, and configure your campaign settings.

How to Sell on TikTok Shop As an Affiliate

If you’re a creator, you can earn commissions by promoting brands’ products (affiliate marketing). It’s a great way to be in the TikTok Shop universe without having to have your own product catalog.

Here’s what to do if this path calls to you:

  1. Apply through your TikTok account. In the TikTok app, you can apply to convert your existing account into a TikTok Shop affiliate creator account (business accounts aren’t eligible to be affiliates on TikTok Shop). Currently, affiliate creators must be at least 18, live in the U.S., pass TikTok’s identity and compliance checks, and have at least 1,000 followers.
  2. Browse products in the Product Marketplace. Once approved, you can explore products that brands have made available for affiliate promotion. Listings typically show the product, its commission rate, seller information, sales data, and whether free samples are available.
  3. Apply to work with a brand or get invited. With an open collaboration, you request permission to promote a product, and the seller approves you. Brands can also invite specific creators through a targeted collaboration. Some shops offer broader shop-level commission arrangements covering multiple products.
  4. Request a sample, purchase the product, or promote it without one. For eligible listings, you can request a free sample. The brand reviews your profile and decides whether to send it. Sample approval is not guaranteed, and creators may be expected to post within a designated period.
  5. Create shoppable content. You make a TikTok video or LIVE featuring the product and attach its TikTok Shop product link. You can also place selected products in the product showcase on your profile. Viewers can then tap the link and buy without leaving TikTok.
  6. Earn commission on attributed sales. When someone orders through your shoppable content, TikTok tracks the sale. Your commission is based on the rate set for that collaboration. Earnings generally become available after the order is successfully fulfilled and the relevant return or settlement period has passed. TikTok also requires creators receiving earnings to provide applicable tax information.

🚨FYI: Creators with fewer than 5,000 followers initially enter TikTok’s 30-day Affiliate Creator Pilot Program. Standard pilot limits currently include up to three shoppable videos per day and three shoppable LIVEs per week. TikTok can remove those limits once creators meet its requirements for followers, activity, account health, and compliance.

Get Manychat So You Can Sell More

Once sales start rolling in, so do the DMs. "Is this still available?" "What size should I get?" "Do you ship to my area?" Answering those messages one by one will drive you crazy, but every unanswered question represents a buyer you might have just lost (see: How Much is a Missed Connection REALLY Costing You?).

With TikTok Automation, you can automate DM replies so that buyers can get answers to common product questions, and you can keep capturing emails and phone numbers for follow-up. Setup takes about 10 minutes, and Manychat is an official TikTok Marketing Partner, so you can automate away without worrying about your account.

Frequently asked questions

There's no monthly fee to open a TikTok Shop. TikTok charges a referral commission on each sale (typically 2% to 8%, depending on product category), plus a small payment processing fee. New sellers sometimes qualify for reduced commission rates as a promotional incentive, so check what's available when you sign up.

Not quite. You need a TikTok Business Account, a registered business or valid personal ID, a US-based bank account, and at least 1,000 followers if you're selling as an individual creator. Requirements vary slightly by country.

If you're selling products online (especially visual, impulse-friendly ones) and your audience skews younger, TikTok Shop can be a seriously profitable channel since buyers don’t have to leave the app to check out. The low entry cost (no monthly fee) makes it easy to try it out and see what happens.

TikTok Shop is the storefront where your products live and where checkout happens; TikTok ads are paid promotions you can run through TikTok Ads Manager to drive more traffic to your shop listings. You can use both together.

The biggest sales drivers are consistent shoppable content, TikTok Live sessions, an active affiliate network, and automating DM replies so you never miss a buyer who's ready to purchase.
