Creators Using DMs Grow 7x Faster — Here’s What They’re Doing Differently

Creators using DM automation are growing up to 742% faster than those who don’t. So what are they doing differently?

Great question, and we’re factoring actual audience feedback from two different reports into our answers.

Users consistently say they want real connection and useful content, but most creators are still optimizing for likes instead of conversations. It’s easy to understand why; the challenges for creators are real:

  • Attention is declining
  • Trust is fragile
  • Algorithms reward depth, not just reach

The creators winning today are doing one thing differently: turning content into conversations.

Shifting From Content to Conversation

Everyone is tired of scrolling. The audiences yearn for connection, and over half of users wish creators would teach something useful.

Followers don’t just want to watch; they want to learn and connect. The Manychat 2026 Creator Report found that 53% of respondents wanted creators to teach them.

Just behind the desire to learn (our teachers would be so proud) comes audience desire for honesty and vulnerability, plus the related wishes to see more failures instead of just wins, for creators to stop chasing trends, and for fewer, higher-quality posts.

The scrollers have spoken, but it’s hard for creators to put down the phone that represents their livelihood, even when they’re trying to avoid burnout. The solution? DM automation.

Bridge to DM Automation

HypeAuditor’s recent report found that DM automation is associated with 30–140% faster annual audience growth and that creators using DM automation generate 40–150% more comments per post. That’s a huge boost in audience engagement, but it doesn’t do much more than feel good if you aren’t able to get those users to take action.

Or, to put it simply:

  • Comments = intent
  • DMs = conversion layer
  • DM automation = scalable relationship engine

Creators are capturing attention, but need to direct it to something valuable with the least friction possible. The DMs are what capture value, and automation makes it possible at scale (at least until creators can build their own clone army).

The Performance Gap (DM vs Non-DM Creators)

HypeAuditor’s report broke down the differences between two groups on Instagram:

  • Group A: Creators using DM automation
  • Group B: Control group of creators not using DM automation

And they found some major differences in engagement rates and growth between the two groups.

Engagement

Creators tapping into DM automation to connect with their followers — and sustain that connection — show higher engagement rates across all audience sizes.

Some creators worry audiences get put off by automation, but the truth is that they appreciate fast response times and personalized automation that sounds like the creator they’ve come to know and love.

Want an example? Amazon affiliate Jasmine Lemire builds personalized responses, follows up herself to keep the connection, and makes time to deepen it where it matters.

Comments (strongest stat block)

Not all engagement is created equal; a comment shows more intent than a like. Creators using DM automation saw way more comments per post, with nano creators seeing more than double the previous number of comments.

Growth

Audience growth also saw a boost for creators getting into the DM automation game; up to 742% growth for smaller creators. That absolutely answers the question of “do I need a large audience to start using automation?” You definitely do not!

Amazon affiliate Patrizia started using automation to level up her account when it had fewer than 1,000 followers.

The takeaway? DM automation doesn’t just improve content performance — it compounds it.

Why This Works

We’re all about giving you a peek under the hood. (Just don’t ask us to fix your car.)

Funnel your commenters into your inbox

  • Turns passive viewers into active participants
  • Creates “micro-commitments”
  • Deepens the relationship while keeping things scalable

Depth over vanity metrics

  • Moves engagement from likes → conversations
  • Stronger signals to algorithms
  • Even if your followers know it’s not you sending out every message, they appreciate personalized automated responses

Built-in conversion path

  • Every post becomes:
    • Lead magnet
    • Funnel entry
    • Relationship builder

DM automation doesn’t replace the relationship creators build with their audience. It gives them space to breathe and deepen the relationship where it matters most, so they can answer the real questions instead of burning out on FAQs.

The Creator Behavior Shift

The golden rule of social media is that consistency matters above all else. The exact time and frequency of your posts matter less than being consistent with the time and frequency you train your followers to expect.

Automation takes the constant labor of responding to every comment and DM away, giving creators more space to make the kind of creative content that made them interested in pursuing this life in the first place. It also gives creators clearer feedback on what’s resonating with followers and converting, increasing motivation while still leaving room for experimentation.

Takeaway: When creators know a post will convert, they post more. When followers know when to expect content, they’ll show up more. It’s a win for everyone.

Where It Works Best

Automation works best for some niches over others, but even if your niche isn’t listed below, it’s worth a shot! You might have an even greater chance of standing out.

Top niches:

  • Education and coaching
  • Fitness and health
  • Business and marketing

Why:

  • High intent content
  • Natural follow-up questions
  • Clear value exchange

The Bigger Context

It’s no secret that creators struggle with burnout. Manychat’s 2026 Creator Report: Algorithm Fatigue found that over half of creators considered quitting in the past year.

Screenshot from the Manychat 2026 Creator Report discussing burnout in creators; 51%considered quitting in the past 12 months.

In addition to creator burnout, audiences feel disconnected and trust is declining — especially with the rise of AI. That doesn’t mean audiences are completely against the use of AI, they just don’t want to see their favorite creators go robot-only with their content creation. The creator report found that 41% of users wouldn’t support fully AI-driven creators.

Automation works when it feels human — not when it replaces humans.

It’s an Open Book Test

Want the cheat sheet for all of this? We’ve got you.

  • Old model: Content → Likes → Hope
  • New model: Content → Comment → DM → Relationship → Conversion

Sure, there are technically more steps, but those steps mean real results.

The fastest-growing creators aren’t just posting better content. They’re building systems that turn every post into a conversation — and every conversation into growth. DM automations help you grow your account faster, post more, get more comments, engagement, and reach, ultimately helping you get more customers.
